An exquisite blending and interweaving of pure voices brings back the Spanish Golden Age. Quondam – Latin for ‘in another time’ – gathers together some of Spain and Europe’s finest exponents of Renaissance choral music, revealing a rare repertoire of three generations of composers from Seville, as well as the sumptuous requiem by the pre-eminent 16th century Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria.

Vast riches from its conquest of the Americas led to an explosion of cultural activity in 16th century Spain—the Golden Age. Centred on its glorious cathedral, Seville became a leading centre of musical excellence and left the world with colourful, moving choral masterpieces. Quondam’s first concert features three generations of Sevillian composers from this Golden Age: Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo. All started as cathedral choirboys, and all became maestros leading cathedral music in Spain. Morales and Guerrero had spent years working at the Papal Chapel in Rome, while all three composers wrote beautiful mass settings imbued with European aesthetics of their time. Rarely heard until its recent rescue from obscurity, Lobo’s sublime, polyphonous setting of the Book of Lamentations is a highlight of this programme.
A second concert showcases the genius of Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548 – 1611). Considered his country’s greatest Renaissance composer and pre-eminent writer of church music, Victoria was Spain’s Palestrina, or England’s William Byrd. He spent his last years in Madrid at the court of the Empress Maria, for whose funeral the beguiling and sumptuous choral requiem Officium Defunctorum was written. Lobo’s motet Versa est in Luctum precedes it, composed for the funeral of Maria’s brother, King Phillip II of Spain.
